In between the hill, there is a bridge that tourist like myself go to, in order to take the picture that follows. I took one quick photo, a rushed off the bridge. Just thinking of it makes my stomach drop.
Isn't it gorgeous. They call it Cinderella's castle, for they say it inspired Disney.
Another castle, that we did not pay to see was Hohenschwangau castle, in the town of Hohenschwangau where we parked and the only place to get tickets to see Neuschwanstein.
We had such a wonderful time. It got cool in the afternoon, but then again we were in the Alps. I am dying to go back to that area and see more. Garmish I hear is wonderful, and at Edelweiss Lodge and Resort you can camp under the stars, get a rustic lodge cabin, or get a room with a view.
We stopped in the Hopfen am See on the way home, not directly on our path, but we were craving pizza. Greatest spot to eat some pizza. If you are going to Neuschwanstein, I highly recommend Rivera Resturant. They have more than just pizza. The setting is amazing, with views of Lake Hopfensee which is right across the street. Oh, and the prices were great too. Here is a link to Riviera.

I remember visiting here a few times while we lived in Germany, and I was absolutely terrified of that bridge as a kid. Sounds like I'd be terrified as an adult, too :)Glad you and your boys are experiencing "quintessential Germany"!
