Random Posting by Mike

Well, I don't usually post on this blog very often, but every once in awhile I'll write something just to see if anyone reads these things anymore. I kind of wonder if they are going the way of the slap bracelets/MC Hammer Pants/wearing Biker Shorts to school/stealing chromies/Starter jackets/tails/any White Rapper, cool for a little bit and then when you look back you say, that wasn't that cool.

But I think blogs can serve a purpose, if only to provide an outlet for creativity late at night when you can't watch another episode of insert 90s sitcom here. But I digress...back to sports
As with many of you, I too watched the World Cup and watched the US lose tonight to a Ghanaian team that wasn't all that good either. I think coming off the big win less than 3 days ago definitely drained the team's energy and it showed in the extra time. As a former soccer player, it was great to see the US jump on the soccer bandwagon and support the US team; however, I still think that it will remain a quadrennial occurence.
I do hope that MLS continues to be successful and one day can attract players from all over the world, not just aging greats looking for a nice place to retire. Through the growth of the domestic league, maybe better athletes, (namely non-suburban white kids and yes I'm including myself in the suburban white kid category), will look to soccer as a possible destination. Right now, an athlete has to decide between pursuing soccer and making $100,000 in MLS or pursuing basketball/football/baseball and making millions...hard decision. Walter Payton's son was a rising soccer star in his teenage years . In high school, he switched to football, played for Miami and is currently in the CFL as a running back. How nice it would be to have 6' 23o lbs Forward on our national soccer team....maybe someday...
